BICYCLE TRAIL GRADING SYSTEM

We hope this illustration will help you better understand the terrain of our hiking trips and experiences.

Grade 1 – Novice

Cycle mainly on well-maintained, well-signposted and generally flat dedicated cycling paths with minimum motorised traffic. Route surfaces can be firm gravel or sealed (e.g. concrete or asphalt). Occasionally on roads but quiet with little traffic. A day's route can be between 20-40 kilometres daily.

This type of cycling trip is ideal for newcomers to overseas cycling; cyclists who look for relaxation and recreation come first; cyclists returning after injuries; and families with children (who cycle regularly).

Please note that even at this level of difficulty, there may be occasional short or gradual long inclines. Cyclists may dismount and push the bicycles at any time.

Grade 2, 2+ – Beginner, Beginner Plus

Cycle mostly from point A to point B on well-maintained, firm gravel or asphalted cycle paths and sometimes on the roads light or some traffic. There may be short climbs awaiting cyclists, and you may push your bicycles up without any problems. On certain routes, there may be consistent undulation for several kilometres. The distance of a day's route can be between 35-70 kilometres daily.

This type of cycling trip is ideal for beginner and/or newcomer cyclists with good physical condition; cyclists looking for active fun and recreation; and families with older children (who cycle regularly) who have cycling experience.

At this level of difficulty level, there will be short climbs or long gentle inclines. Cyclists may dismount and push the bicycles at any time.

Grade 3, 3+ – Intermediate, Intermediate Plus

The cycling routes are mainly on flat and hilly terrain. There are also some steep climbs to overcome. But such climbs are generally followed with leisurely stretches to regenerate and enjoy. These cycling trips encompass longer distances and climb on mostly firm, sealed and sometimes uneven surfaces. There may be more road cycling with traffic. The distance of a day's route can be between 50-100 kilometres daily. These itineraries are not to be underestimated.

This type of cycling trip is ideal for cyclists in good physical and good health conditions; cyclists with overseas cycling experience(s); and experienced and/or advanced cyclists.

On challenging cycling routes, there are also flat and leisurely sections on these cycle trips.

Grade 4 – Advanced

The cycling routes alternate between hilly longer climbs and flat terrains. There may be more road cycling with light to moderate traffic. The distance amounts to 50-100 kilometres daily. Good endurance is a must for these trips. You can expect well-maintained asphalt cycle paths as well as firm gravel surfaces.

This type of cycling trip is ideal for cyclists with stamina and very good physical condition; experienced and advanced cyclists.

There are also partly flat sections which serve to help cyclists to recover, breathe deeply and regenerate.
