We met our guide at a small village and transferred into their vehicles to the base of hill. The journey took about 20 minutes into the plantation before we reach the base. The trail up to the summit is divided into 7 sections. The first part of the trail up to section 4, is generally gentle undulating trails. The path gets steeper for a short section and we had to cross a ridge before we reach the summit. There is no view at the summit as it is largely covered by lush vegetation. We may just miss it if we did not have a guide with us as the summit area is simply a small piece of land.
To reach the waterfall, we had to turn off at section 2. As we walked along the path, the sound of the cascading waterfall grew louder and it got us all very excited. To reach the waterfall and its pool for swimming, we had to hike steep down with a gradient of almost 70%. We could steal glimpses of the waterfall as we made the descent.
We spent some time at the waterfall and some of our hikers took a cool swim in the pool or simply soak our tired feet in the cool water. As we continue our journey to complete the hike, we need to do some stream crossings back to dry land before we reach the base again.
Gunung Muntahak is suitable for beginner hikers and it can be done in a day without the need for overnight in Johor. We will be organizing another hike to Gunung Muntahak and if you are keen to join us, sign up here.
