A Festival To Run
The weather was perfect when we arrived at the marathon beach in the morning. Music was playing in the Gujwa Life Sports Park as we entered. In view, we saw a row of 2 M tall card displaying countries from where the runners are from. Even if there is only 1 runner signed up from a country, the organizer will still prepare a card. We were impressed by the dedication and the marathon truly lives up to its name. “International” and the practice of “Tourism”.
As I was still in the midst of counting the placard of nationalities and taking pictures with the mascots around, several loud pop sound let off some colourful smoke and kicked off the beginning of the marathon festival. We had a k-pop style warm up that naturally led us to move.
The runners for 42 KM and 21 KM began their flag off at 8.30 AM sharp. As I was taking part in the 10 KM category, I went to the start line and join the crowd to cheer on the runners. I am very surprised I can get so close to the runners as they run off the start line.
15 minutes later, it was our turn to flag off for the 10 KM runners. Bang ! And off we go ! The first kilometre was ran a distance away from the coast but we saw the gigantic wind mill afar.
Finally the coast of Jeju island came to sight. I am so captivated by the pretty cafes popping up by the coast as I ran. Finally I relented, visited the cafes, stopped to take many pictures along the way and lost my time !
After more than an hour 30 minutes, I finally crossed the finishing line. LOL! Once you return, the first thing to do is to print out your finisher’s certificate. Only after that then can you collect your medal.
By then we were too hungry and headed over to enjoy the free flow abalone porridge and kimchi that were prepared and cooked on the stop by the locals. As much as you can eat, you may simply eat to your heart’s content.
